Kitwe is the right place for a Copperbelt supply business for the same reason the mines are here: everything is within an hour or two. Chingola and Chililabombwe to the north-west, Mufulira and the Kasumbalesa road to the north, Kalulushi next door, Luanshya to the south and Ndola down the line of rail. A warehouse in Kitwe reaches all of them the same day.
What is held is what a mine and its contractors consume rather than what looks good in a catalogue: MIG and flux-cored wire, stick electrodes, TIG rods, torch consumables, cutting and grinding discs, gas cutting equipment, hand and power tools, and the PPE that has to be at the gate before a crew starts. Shutdown scopes are quoted line by line, with quantities set against the scope instead of the average month.
Equipment comes through the same branch. Tyre handling for mine tyre bays, Saur and Stricta forklift attachments, Feeler plant and forklift weighing systems are specified by the Nelspruit technical desk and delivered into the Copperbelt. Because the Zambian entity is a Zambian operating company, the vendor onboarding and local content questions that usually precede a first order are answered rather than deferred.
Consumables come back with pricing, availability and lead time. Equipment comes back with the model, the carriage class and a price.
